Sober Living Q & A

What is sober living?

Sober living refers to housing that is attuned to the needs of patients with substance use disorder (SUD). Many people who participate in recovery programs find that sober living is extremely helpful in maintaining their sobriety once they complete their program.

A sober living home allows you to live in an environment that is heavily focused on your sobriety before you transition home.

What are sober living homes like?

Sober living homes are regular homes that have the same features as your own home. But, in sober living homes, there’s recovery support on site. One or more dedicated experts live in the sober home with you and other people with SUD.

Sober living homes are dedicated to maintaining sobriety, so the rules of the home are designed to make that easier. Some standard rules in sober living homes are:

  • No alcohol or drug use
  • Follow house curfew rules
  • Continue to participate in your recovery program
  • Attend house meetings with other residents
  • Perform assigned chores in the home
  • Maintain respectful behavior towards all others in the home

Essentially, a sober living home creates the best possible atmosphere to help you maintain sobriety. While the rules may seem rather restrictive at first, they’re designed to help you avoid many of the pitfalls that newly sober people face.

Is sober living right for me?

Sober living may be right for you if you’re coming to the end of your recovery program. The Infinity Care team discusses your needs with you at that time. Many patients find that sober living is an ideal transition between their recovery program and home life.

How long do I need to stay in a sober living home?

How long you stay in sober living depends on your individual needs.

Is your home a safe and stable place where you won’t be faced with constant temptations? Do you have the support of your loved ones in staying sober?

If you can say “yes” to both, you might not need to stay in a sober living home as long as someone in another situation would.

When you’re recovering, you need less stress, not more. Sober living can help minimize anxiety and lets you focus on your personal recovery. If you have questions about how the recovery and sober living process works, contact Infinity Care by phone or online today to speak to a caring recovery specialist.
