What is an intensive outpatient program?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a scheduled treatment plan that a person can go through for substance use disorder and several other mental health conditions. Unlike an inpatient program, with IOP, the patient goes home at the end of the day and doesn’t stay overnight or for multiple nights in a facility as you go through the process.

An intensive outpatient program doesn’t involve round-the-clock supervision. Therefore, patients can engage in everyday day-to-day life, including going to work and any caretaking responsibilities.

The lack of change in day-to-day life may make it easier for the patient to recover and reap all of the benefits of the treatment program.
