Counseling Q & A

 What is counseling?

Counseling is a treatment that helps you heal through talking. During counseling sessions, you speak with a highly trained mental health professional to discuss your problems, concerns, goals, and individual needs.

Counselors provide mental health education to help you gain insight into your situation and needs. Additionally, they give you tools for healing.

What are the types of counseling?

There are a few forms of counseling, including:

Individual counseling

Individual counseling appointments are one-on-one sessions with you and your counselor. Everything you say is private. There are many therapeutic techniques, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which teach you how to manage thoughts, feelings, and behavior.

Group counseling

Group counseling, also called a support group, consists of other people who share common challenges. Your support group may include others who have the same diagnosis. Groups are led by an experienced counselor who helps everyone get the most from the sessions.

Counseling is usually non-emergency care. However, Infinity Care also offers crisis management counseling for patients who are in urgent situations, such as suicidal ideation or self-harm.

When do I need counseling?

Counseling is helpful for anyone who is having trouble coping with their thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. If you feel worried, frightened, anxious, or like you’re not in control, counseling can help. Counseling is highly effective for mental and behavioral health challenges, such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Mood disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Substance use disorder (SUD)
  • Domestic violence

Many of these situations respond to counseling. But counseling might be just one part of your overall treatment plan.

What other treatments go with counseling?

At Infinity Care, the DOC-certified team has special training and skills in many areas to give you comprehensive recovery care. Some of  the treatments that often work alongside counseling are:

Medication management

Medication management generally refers to using prescription medications to treat mental health disorders.

A few common examples of medications used include antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)

While MAT sounds like the same thing as medication management, it actually refers to a specific type of medication for people struggling with substance use disorders (SUD) like opioid use disorder (OUD).

Drugs like Suboxone® can reduce withdrawal symptoms, which allows you to participate in counseling with your full energy and get the best results.
