LGBTQ+ Support Q & A

What does LGBTQ+ support include?

LGBTQ+ people make up a big part of the United States population. Current polling suggests that more than 7% of adults identify as LGBTQ+.

While the acronym stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning, the plus sign covers many other groups, too. LGBTQ+ is an inclusive abbreviation.

While you might sometimes see it as LGBTQI, LGBTQIA, or LGBTQIA+, the intent is always the same: to include people who don’t identify as heterosexual or their assigned gender at birth.

People who identify as their assigned birth gender are known as cisgender individuals, while those who are attracted exclusively to the opposite gender are considered heterosexual. Many people are both, so they’re known as cishet.

What are the unique concerns that LGBTQ+ people face today?

LGBTQ+ people face the same problems that cishet people face, but in many cases, LGBTQ+ people also face additional physical and mental health challenges.

For example, many transgender people face mental health difficulties because their body doesn’t align with their identity and because they experience serious mistreatment from other people.

Some physical health problems are also more common in LGBTQ+ individuals. For instance, about 38% of lesbians have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) compared to just 14% of heterosexual women, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

When you’re facing social, physical, or mental difficulties, the Infinity Care team provides steady support.
